A Dhaka court on Monday denied bail to 27 people arrested following a police raid on the headquarters of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSaD) in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter heard the bail petitions, with defence lawyers seeking their release and the prosecution opposing the applications.
The detainees are Didarul Alam Tuhin, Iman Ahmed Imon, Molla Mohammad Shahjahan Siraj, Joy Sarkar, Miraj Ahmed, Miraj Malitha, Rabiul Islam, Milon Kumar Mahanta, Kawsar Hossain, Anjan Shil, Jalal Uddin Mondal, Abdul Latif, Shamim Ahmed, Ahmed Ahsan Habib, Sujan Ali, Tasikul Islam, Saifullah Sayek, Nayan Ali, Sajidul Islam Tuhin, Tajul Islam, Nishkar Samrat Hossain Talukdar, Anwar Hossain, Alamgir Hossain, Al Amin Howlader, Tushar Ali, Rashidul Haque and Mir Muktisur Rahman.
On Sunday night, Paltan Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Nazmul Islam produced the 27 before court and sought an order to keep them in custody after showing them arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Police allege that the detainees chanted “Joy Bangla” inside the party office and created an “unstable and disorderly environment”.
Their lawyers also filed bail petitions that day. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam ordered the detainees sent to jail and fixed Monday for the hearing on the applications.
Police had detained hundreds of people during Saturday’s raid on the JaSad headquarters. Most were later released after verification, while 27 were formally arrested and sent to court.
